Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Yemisi Sanni (B.F.A. fashion) carries the rich hues of her heritage into the contemporary realm of fashion. Her creative journey finds its genesis in the heart of Yorùbá traditions, specifically the cultural practice of adorning family fabrics, known as asoẹbí. This tradition has left an indelible mark on her creative spirit. “I appreciate how fashion serves as a unique expression for each individual while also being collectively appreciated,” she says. For Sanni, fashion becomes more than just attire. It becomes a celebration of individuality within the shared cultural canvas of her community.

Sanni is the daughter of a fabric merchant. “As a child, I had an assortment of fabric scraps to play with, allowing me to hand-stitch garments for my dolls,” she says. This hands-on experience formed the foundation of her understanding of various fabrics and design styles. Sanni also found unique inspiration in the rhythms of hip hop and R&B, as well as the costume traditions of Hollywood and specifically Bollywood. “The vibrant explosion of colors and the theatrical elements and rhythm of the costumes never failed to be a captivating spectacle and a wellspring of inspiration for my creativity,” she says.

The intersection of cultural heritage and identity is a central theme in Sanni’s gender-neutral designs, which offer a unique means of self-expression. “The basis of my work lies in using indigenous textiles to craft patterns and prints that embody Yorùbá folklore and traditions,” she says. “Then I translate these elements into contemporary silhouettes and designs tailored for today’s dynamic individuals.”

Drawing from her journey, Sanni encourages aspiring artists to approach their creative work with diligence and authenticity. “I firmly believe that creatives should strive to master repetition to the extent that it cultivates an expert’s understanding of their design process,” she says.

Sanni’s story is a tapestry of culture, creativity, and the pursuit of her dreams. Her designs speak a universal language, celebrating individuality within the shared embrace of traditions. As she forges on in her pursuits, she promises to write new chapters of innovation and inspiration immersed in the spirit of her Yorùbá heritage.
